Closet Confidential: Amanda Wong
We hung out with Amanda on a lazy weekend afternoon and peeked into her wardrobe.
Amanda lives in Vancouver, British Columbia and is a Senior Strategy Manager at TELUS, a Canadian telecommunications company. She loves dogs (is literally obsessed with them), often quotes The Office, and climbs challenging mountains (she summited Mount Kilimanjaro!)
Given your busy, on-the-go lifestyle, how do you store all your garments?
How do you keep everything organized?
What is your current favourite clothing item?
What is your go-to outfit?
What are your clothing consumption habits (eg: how often do you buy new clothes, what’s the process, etc.)
I limit how often I buy new clothes and what I’m buying. A few years ago, I used to buy items for special events but I don’t do that anymore. I re-wear items in my wardrobe, borrow from my mom, or friends. When I get new clothes, I tend to go to my staple stores and browse around. I have an idea of what’s missing or what gaps I have in my closet and aim to get those items. I also find it helpful to clean out my closet and look at what I have. When I cleaned out my closet earlier this year, I realized I have a lot of solid colour t-shirts and don’t need more of those.
What retailers do you shop at?
A lot of my clothing is from Artizia. I also shop at Zara & Uniqlo, but I make sure what I buy is good quality and will be worn numerous times. Lastly, I purchase staple clothing items from Club Monaco and J Crew.
What’s your favourite clothing brand & why?
Probably Aritzia. I like that the brand originated from Vancouver. Artizia also has a great variety of clothes - comfy casual pieces and good work attire. Plus, the garments are high quality and last a long time. The designs are also timeless and never really go out of style.
What process do you follow when you purchase new garments?
After seeing a garment I like, I look at the price, think about how many times I’m going to wear it and calculate the cost per wear. I often pretend like I’m shopping with my sister and I can hear her asking me questions like: ‘where are you going to wear this?’ ‘how many times are you going to wear it?’, etc.
How do you get your closet ready for different seasons?
I usually switch over my wardrobe twice a year - once for spring/summer and once for fall/winter.
How often do you purge your closet?
I usually purge my closet every three months. One thing I started doing was not buying more clothing hangers. My goal is to keep the same amount of clothes in my wardrobe, meaning every time I buy something, I know something has to go. That way, I ensure everything I own my wardrobe is worn and it forces me to consciously think of this when I want to purchase new things.
How do you get rid of things you don’t want?
I typically remove 8-10 items from my wardrobe every time I purge my closet. I start by giving things to family or friends. After that, I give it to Hunter & Hare, a local Vancouver consignment shop. I like that they go through the clothes I give them and give me back what they can’t sell. With any leftover clothes, I donate it to the local women’s shelter.
