Equity & Justice
Transparently, our team is still unlearning our subconscious racist thoughts and as such, felt that it was better to wait until we were “fully educated” and “no longer racist” to come forward.
However, we realized that we likely never become “fully un-racist” — this is a life-long journey and if we wait until we’re “fully educated”, it would be too late. Therefore, it’s important to have this conversation and share our journey.
Our Commitments
Team
As we continue to build our team, we aim to abolish barriers and make opportunities for Black, Indigenous, and other historically excluded communities. We intend to build a truly representative team that has varying ethnicities, cultures, thoughts, and beliefs.
Contractors
Whenever we work with contractors or employ contractors for clients, we aim to work with Black, Indigenous, and other historically excluded businesses. Feel free to email us at hello@recloseted.com with any recommendations for contractors. Thank you!
Learn
Our entire team commits to educating ourselves and learning + unlearning our subconscious racism. We commit to doing our best and putting in the work to become true allies.
Note From Selina
“…Being called a racist is actually not the worst thing. The worst thing is privately hiding [your] racism to stay safe, liked, and comfortable while others suffer and die. There are worse things than being criticized — like being a coward.” — Untamed by Glennon Doyle
Growing up as a first-generation Chinese Canadian, I have experienced a range of racism — from being teased about my food to being called a c***k to worrying about my safety due to hate crimes.
Although I experience racism, I do not experience it to the severity and frequency that Black, Indigenous, and other historically oppressed individuals do. It took George Floyd’s tragic passing for me to realize that I am a privileged person of color and get treated better.
When I saw the injustices that happened to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Dion Johnson, and so many other Black and Indigenous lives, it devastated me and I knew I had to work on my allyship.
I looked within and realized that after living in a generally ignorant society and decades of media consumption — I had a slew of subconscious racist beliefs that I needed to unlearn. I still have a lot of work to do, but I’m educating myself through books, podcasts, and equity + justice consultants.
In conclusion, I’m committed to ensuring that our team at Recloseted are allies. I know I’m not an expert but I could not stay silent and stand by. There’s likely something on this page that is racist that I cannot see right now. For that, I apologize and if you would like to reach out via email at selina@recloseted.com, I value the opportunity to do better.
Ultimately, let’s all be courageous and embrace this journey to become true allies.
